Periodontal Treatment
Periodontal Disease Treatment and Prevention in Center Line, MI
Periodontal disease is also known as gum disease and is a surprisingly common problem. In fact, 80% of the adult population have some form of periodontal disease and many people do not even know they are suffering from it.
Gum disease is a condition that compromises the soft tissue surrounding the teeth. Tartar buildup begins to attack the gums and bones that support the teeth and cause drastic deterioration if not eliminated by regular dental cleaning. The bacteria in this dental plaque builds on the surface of the teeth and can lead to chronic infection if left untreated. Gingivitis is the mildest form of periodontal disease and is characterized by puffy, red, swollen or readily bleeding gums. Gingivitis is the only stage of gum disease that is reversible with good care. If the disease progresses to peridontis, the bone and connective tissue supporting the teeth are weakened and may lead to the loss of teeth.
Periodontal disease is the number one cause of tooth loss in American adults, which is why it is imperative to develop a daily hygiene schedule and have regular dental check ups. Gum disease is preventable with a daily brushing routine and dental exams combined with professional cleaning once every six months.
Signs and symptoms of periodontal disease include persistent bad breath, bleeding, receding gums, swollen or tender gum tissue, loose teeth, and flaring or new spacing of teeth.
